Old postcards from the early 20th century, compared to the same view shown on Google Street View today. The postcards come from my own collection. Almost all of them are from England, mainly showing West London, Middlesex, Surrey, Berks and Bucks. Click on the postcards to see enlarged versions. Street View images are the copyright of Google. Northwood, Middlesex, Church Street 1913

This splendid postcard by W. H. Applebee shows an early cinema - an original 'fleapit'. The film being advertised is Quo Vadis. There are not many of these old fleapits left now, but this one in Northwood still survives, but only just. In the Google Streetview image you can see it is very dilapidated and has become the Northwood Old Folks Dining Club. However I believe that has closed now and there are plans to demolish the cinema.

Great photo. My mother’s family originated in Northwood, Emmanuel road, also Hilliard road. Great memories visiting from Scotland. Loved Ruislip lido
