Old postcards from the early 20th century, compared to the same view shown on Google Street View today. The postcards come from my own collection. Almost all of them are from England, mainly showing West London, Middlesex, Surrey, Berks and Bucks. Click on the postcards to see enlarged versions. Street View images are the copyright of Google. Whitstable, Kent, Harbour Place, c1910
Whitstable, Kent, Harbour Place, circa 1910. Harbour Place is now called Woodlawn Street. Unfortunately I don't know what Waverley House was. It is now a Chinese take-away. On the right is the New Inn. Click the postcard to enlarge.

Chatham, Kent, Film Promotion Postcards c1931
Below the Google Street View showing Chatham station today is another postcard from Chatham, this time promoting the 1931 film 'Penrod and Sam', starring Leon Janne and Frank Coghlan Jr. I haven't managed to find the location of this one on Google Street View, perhaps an eagle-eyed reader can assist.

A Dozen Unlocated Shop Postcards
The Sepia Saturday Blog has 'shops' as its theme this week. I thought this would be a good opportunity to show a dozen shop postcards from my collection that I haven't managed to locate. They are all interesting in their own right and deserve to be shown. Click the postcards to enlarge.
The postcard below is a Co-operative shop selling drapery and womens' clothes. Unknown location.
Below - The South Suburban Co-Operative Society. Possibly Croydon area.
Below - A Belgian Butcher's shop, probably London.
Below - F. Gale, postcard shop. Unknown location.
Below - International Stores - unknown location.

Hillingdon, Middlesex, c1906 and 1912
Hillingdon, Middlesex, circa 1906 and 1912. In these two postcards we can see the Red Lion pub which appears to be largely untouched. However the surrounding area is much less rural. The road on the right has been cleared to widen the Uxbridge Road. We can see a tram in the postcard coming from Uxbridge. The photographic postcard was produced by W. H. Applebee of Ashford. Postcard showing people with Edwardian Hats c1910
The theme for this week's Sepia Saturday blog is 'hats', so I thought I'd show this postcard from my collection. It has a Tooting postmark (South London). I have no idea who the people are, where they are or what they are doing. I think they may be by a river, waiting for a boat to take them somewhere. There are boxes stacked up next to them, at least one of them containing vintage wine. A typical view of Edwardian hats is on display. From left, a flat cap, a boater and a homburg. The ladies sport the elaborate hats of the era. Click the postcard to enlarge.

Northwood, Middlesex, The Old Gate Pub c1914
Northwood, Middlesex, The Old Gate Pub circa 1914. The pub, now called The Gate, looks largely unspoiled. However the surrounding area is much busier. Postcard probably produced by W. H. Applebee for Rawlinsons of Northwood. Click the postcard to enlarge.
