Slough, Buckinghamshire, High Street c1926

Slough, Buckinghamshire, High Street circa 1926. Most of Slough High Street is unrecognisable now from pre-war times, but this stretch of the High Street has retained some of its old buildings. Postcard published by WHA. For more old photographs visit the Sepia Saturday blog. As always, click the postcard to enlarge.

  1. The street looks very narrow and unsuited for traffic now--it must be because of the wide sidewalk.

  2. I believe I favor the first yesterday photo the best!

  3. As ever the sepia version wins- full of character - ladies chatting at the kerb and a gentleman dashing across the road in a hurry!

  4. Google seem to have caught it when there were roadworks. The bus shelter on the left has also narrowed the road. Sepia wins for me too.

  5. Every period has complaints. Slough in 1926 might have considered this an example of congestion!

  6. Another great comparison : but isn't it odd how the same street looks so much wider in the early photograph.

  7. Is it just the perspective, or is it actually narrower now? It looks as though one side of the street has been rebuilt, or the pavement extended, or something.

  8. well, the Lipton sign is gone, but otherwise, a nice scenery. i love old buildings, even if i favor modern constructions for living, because of the amenities, read here: storage!!!

  9. Looks like a pleasant place to be in either case.

  10. It's really a shame how cluttered it now looks. I'm guessing that's a bus stop on the left. And I'm imagining nobody stands off the sidewalk in the gutter casually chatting as the lady is doing in the first shot.
