Old postcards from the early 20th century, compared to the same view shown on Google Street View today. The postcards come from my own collection. Almost all of them are from England, mainly showing West London, Middlesex, Surrey, Berks and Bucks. Click on the postcards to see enlarged versions. Street View images are the copyright of Google. That is grim indeed!
ReplyDeleteThis is what I find 9 times out of 10 when I google the places my ancestors lived - vacant land. Such a waste.
ReplyDeleteAs always the comparison is fascinating. Such roundabouts always seem to come to occupy what were much-photographed squares and centres 100 years ago.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic postcard, the detail is amazing. The 'progress' to today is criminal. The loss of the buildings is awful, but far more is lost besides.
ReplyDeleteI like the details on the postcard better. I wonder what will be there 100 years from now.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to tell it's the same place, it's changed so much.
ReplyDeleteGreat postcard. I agree about the horrible change of modern times but people of that era would approve of the loss of the overhead tram wires.
ReplyDeleteI do love to be able to google those old places abut yes it is disappointing to find such changes. I can hardly recognize my own little hometown.
ReplyDeleteQMM
This looks more like what we would have done in the U.S.
ReplyDeleteIt looks a more interesting place in the postcard. But I suppose that most things are more interesting than a roundabout!
ReplyDeleteI particularly like the "Photography Stores" on offer at the local chemist ... a sign of the times just as the roundabout is a sign of our times. I hadn't ever given much thought to how a roundabout is so good for traffic flow, and that is exactly why it ruins an intersection from the aesthetic point of view. Nothing and nobody ever stops there any more, so of course there's no reason for any shops either.
