Postcards Then and Now

Old postcards from the early 20th century, compared to the same view shown on Google Street View today. The postcards come from my own collection. Mortlake, Cromwell Lane c1905

Old Cromwell House and Cromwell Lane were demolished when Mortlake Brewery expanded. The gates were retained and moved 40 metres to the west in Williams Lane. The gates now look dilapidated. The brewery is now defunct. There is a web page about Cromwell House at the Barnes and Mortlake History Society. The Cromwell Lane postcard below is wonderfully evocative and is one of my favourite postcards.
