Hayes, Middlesex, Station Road, c1913. In this postcard by W. H. Applebee you can clearly see his three-wheeled car, an A. C. Sociable that appeared in many of his postcards (also see these posts on this blog here, here and here). This postcards is one of my favourites from my collection. It gives the town of Hayes a 'wild-west' feel. Notice the girl walking down the street and the men sitting in the garden of the cafe on the right staring at her (or perhaps they are staring at the photographer)?

Have a look at this week's Sepia Saturday blog - it features a similar three-wheeled vehicle.

What a wonderful busy street scene. Perhaps the motorcycle-sidecar belong to the photographer? The modern view just doesn't compare, does it?
ReplyDeleteI can see why it would be a favorite photo, Howard, but probably not your favorite modern street view with such extreme contrast. The man halfway through the fence adds a curious tension, and makes one wonder why the photographer chose that moment to click the shutter.
ReplyDeleteYes, I can see why this is a favourite, what a wonderful scene!
ReplyDeleteThis scene could keep me busy for hours. So many faces and folks. I particularly like the young boy and young girl in the center of the photo --- a study in contrasts.
ReplyDeleteOh hasn't the street changed! What a shame the trees went on the right.
ReplyDeleteThat's a very interesting card. I don't think three-wheeled cars were ever popular here.
ReplyDeleteIt's a wonderful card and I can quite see why it is one of your favourites
ReplyDeleteWhen would this picture have been taken? The young girl's skirt is quite short compared to the long ones worn around turn of the century...Great entry to Sepia.
ReplyDeleteWe had a local ice-cream man who drove a bike just like that where the 'bonnet' opened to reveal the ice cream tubs. The bike was registered in Birmingham it seems. Great card.
ReplyDeleteWhat a busy day in Hayes. It doesn't look like the kind of town that would give way to high-rise buildings.
ReplyDeleteIs it really the same place? Very hard to tell.
ReplyDeleteYes I do like that first photo too.
This is fantastic!
