Hayes, Middlesex, Canal Bridge circa 1913. These old postcards by W. H. Applebee show the bridge over the Grand Union Canal at Hayes in Middlesex. The old pub is still there on the right and the modern view looks quite similar, but the rest of Hayes has changed almost beyond recognition since the photos were taken. I have quite a few WHA postcards of Hayes and will post more of them here soon.

This view of the bridge was taken from the canal bank:
Old postcards from the early 20th century, compared to the same view shown on Google Street View today. The postcards come from my own collection. Almost all of them are from England, mainly showing West London, Middlesex, Surrey, Berks and Bucks. Click on the postcards to see enlarged versions. Street View images are the copyright of Google. I think the people are more interesting than the bridge.
ReplyDeleteI love bridges of all sorts, but I have to agree with Postcardy, it’s that ‘moment in time’ caught again; the litle chap on the bike and his Mother’s amusement. He wouldn’t be cycling over that busy bridge now!
ReplyDeleteThe 'old' bridge is much more interesting than the modern version. Those safety barriers are downright ugly.
ReplyDeleteThat little kid on the bike looks so little to be whizzing along like that in the street. On the other hand, there is no traffic to be seen.
ReplyDeleteInteresting that all the people are looking directly at the photographer. Must have been quite a diversion in their otherwise humdrum day.

That child is about to ride right into an intersection. Folks seem to be unconcerned. Apparently the milkman and the iceman have already made their rounds. Great contrasts
ReplyDeletefunny in the 2nd postcard, to see a constable with the rest of the crowd on the bridge... shouldn't he be busy chasing after bad guys???

Great old bridge. The side view is wonderful to see.
ReplyDeleteI like the telephone poles. As amazing as it must have seemed, the new web of telephone and electric wires must have drawn a lot of complaints and groans about the "good old days".
ReplyDeleteI was wondering what factor most contributes to the different feel between the now and then photos, and I think the road markings have a lot to do with it.
