Norton St. Philip, Somerset, The George Inn c1910

Norton St Philip, Somerset, The George Inn circa 1910. Situated in Norton St. Philip near Bath, The George Inn is one of the oldest in the country. A grade one listed building, it hasn't changed much in the last hundred years. The little window above the sign has gone though. The landlord at the time of the postcard was Thomas Edgar Dando, born 1877. I think the two men in the doorway are carrying fishing rods. The publisher of this postcard, Young & Co of Teddington has wrongly called it Ye Olde George. Click on the pictures to enlarge.

  1. Oh, this is great! At first I thought the roof was thatched but I think it's just ivy.

Are you sure those are fishing poles? They look like guns to me...maybe they're going on a fox hunt! :)

  2. Oh I need to visit there. Wonderful looking pub and - from the exterior shot - it doesn't look as if it has been messed about too much.

  3. A great pub that looks much better with the horse and cart outside than with the modern motor car.

  4. It certainly hasn't changed much. As for calling it "Ye Olde George," this may be more facetious than wrong.

  5. What a very interesting building. Would love to see what the surrounding area was like when it was originally built. I'd also love to have seen it at night with the windows glowing candle light.

  6. Great then and now pictures! Preservation is a good thing. Love that last picture. I think one guy is holding a tripod, the other a gun the young boy in back has a stick or a bushwhacking rod or something and there is a ghost standing with him. It's all very interesting!

  7. For some reason I couldn't see the street view on this one, but I certainly like the old views. I also really appreciate the close-ups. Thanks for doing that.

  10. I would love to visit this pub; I really enjoyed going to the pubs in the UK when I spent a few years in the 1970's. It's so good that it has been altered much outside, if at all.

  11. Not only did they take out the little window, they added two more close to either end under the roof! This postcard is so clear -- to be able to see so much detail when enlarged. It's great the building is still in existence. I love old buildings.
