Horton Road, Berkshire, c1910
Horton Road, circa 1910. Horton is a village in Berkshire. It is between Windsor and Staines-upon-Thames. The poet John Milton lived there between 1632 and 1640. Postcard by Young & Co of Teddington. Click the postcard to enlarge.
Is the gothic revival building on the right, with a bell on top, an old school house? Then, are those the school children posing for the postcard photo?
Another terrific village scene, Howard. It's interesting that boys and girls are separated which would be expected of some schools. The flagpole would be typical of American school yards. I don't associate it with British schools, but it would seem less likely for a church yard.
Yes, the building on the right is a school. It was owned by the church and I believe it was built in the 1870s. I attended there for 2 years until it closed in 1973 when I was 6/7 years old. One of the gentlemen in the background is carrying a bread basket. To the left of them, hidden by the trees is the village bakery " Hovis" which closed some 50 years ago and is now a private house. It seems behind the children to the right is a horse and cart though I don't know if this was anything to do with the bakery.
I went to the school from 1952 to 1954. The school had three teachers and three classes, with about 55 pupils, from 5 to 11 years old, in total. Just after I started at the school the old chemical toilets were replaced with proper flush ones. I lived in the bakery opposite the school.
