Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, The Swan Hotel c1910

Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, The Swan Hotel circa 1910. The Swan Hotel, reputedly visited by Pepys in 1661 and rebuilt after a fire in 1785, was demolished in 1973 and replaced by modern retail units. Click the postcard to enlarge.

  1. Wonderful postcard, the inn looks as if it stood at an important junction. Some (probably most) of the 1970s redevelopment is just criminal. What were they thinking?

  2. They were thinking, "Someday this building will be a listed 20th century landmark included in National Trust." Perhaps if it lasts another 1000 years.
