Old postcards from the early 20th century, compared to the same view shown on Google Street View today. The postcards come from my own collection. Almost all of them are from England, mainly showing West London, Middlesex, Surrey, Berks and Bucks. Click on the postcards to see enlarged versions. Street View images are the copyright of Google. Well, it looks like they kept the slight curve in the road and that's about it.
ReplyDeleteI just adore the little children walking hand in hand and that darling hat she's wearing! Imagine that sight today, here in American, never! Kind of sad really! Great photos of yesterday, thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteWhat a shame that so little is left!
ReplyDeleteIt is the kind of old postcard I really love - so full of detail and information. You could write a short local history book based on that one shot alone.
ReplyDeleteWonderful postcard and so sad that it has all gone. I wonder who the little boy and girl were and what became of them.
ReplyDeleteFantastic shot, so full of movement. There’s so much to pore over here. I too was immediately drawn to the children on the left.
ReplyDeleteGood work on tracking it down. Of course, I liked the way it looked in the olden days better.

I love seening all the people and signs on the old postcard view.
ReplyDeleteThe distant view on the left looks similar. As usual, prefer the old shot.
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed seeing the old street scene. People tear down buildings and call it progress but it seems to me the views from the past are always more attractive.
ReplyDeleteWithout a doubt, it looks so much better in 1922! The 1922 scene is fantastic and I full of so much appeal. I especially like the children walking hand in hand. Unfortunately there is not much personality in the modern day scene.
ReplyDeleteThe photographer really captured a sense of pedestrian motion. Perhaps if we shake the card, everyone will become animated again. On a modern note, I especially like how Google Streetview allows one to zip ahead of the stalled traffic and even go up streets that seem blocked. The people in the old postcard would be amazed.
