Richmond, Surrey, The Theatre circa 1904. This is Richmond's fourth theatre and was built in 1899. It is still going strong today. The postcard was published in about 1904 by local photographer Frank Case. Below the Google Street View are some pages from a booklet published to celebrate the opening of the theatre, published in about 1900, called 'The Theatres of Richmond 1719 to 1899'. I particularly like the opulent bar. The theatre's interior is surprisingly unchanged today. Finally there is a postcard by Young and Co of Teddington showing the theatre from the other side taken in about 1910. Click on the pictures to enlarge. The theatre's official website is here and there is a wikipedia article here.

Old postcards from the early 20th century, compared to the same view shown on Google Street View today. The postcards come from my own collection. Almost all of them are from England, mainly showing West London, Middlesex, Surrey, Berks and Bucks. Click on the postcards to see enlarged versions. Street View images are the copyright of Google. It's hard to beat those opulent bars and theater boxes. Wonderful photos!
ReplyDeleteThat looks like an age of elegance where theatres were concerned...
ReplyDeleteIt would be fun to attend a performance at an elegant old theater like that.
ReplyDeleteA fine old theatre with an elegance that speaks for itself.
ReplyDeleteThank you for showing us Richmond’s Theatres through the ages. I think the current building is wonderful.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful, very impressive! To visit such a place is already half the joy.
ReplyDeleteOh you have certainly out done yourself here! The first photo of then and now really reminds me of a place in London! Not far from where we stayed! I know it's not, but your after photo this time around is even cooler than the before, which doesn't usually happen for me! Very cool!
ReplyDeleteHow absolutely beautiful and wonderful the first one has been kept them up. Love the opulence of all of them!
ReplyDeleteFour theatres - and I think I like the fourth one the best. It's great to see the interior views and the admission prices too. I also really like the card with the stamp on the front.
ReplyDeleteWow, these are wonderful! Thanks for showing them to us.
ReplyDeleteTake care,
Kathy M.
A perfect choice for a majestic theater. And I've seen a show there too! The Richmond Green remains my favorite place for its timeless qualities.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for the photos of Richmond Theatre. I am researching my family history and my grandad was a musician in the orchestra of the Richmond theatre during the early years of the fourth theatre. I am putting together what I can of my family history for my own children and grandchildren, so I was simply thrilled to find these photos, thank you.
ReplyDeleteAnother Frank Matcham masterpiece! It is still a remarkably beautiful theatre.
ReplyDeleteI have had the joy of working in that theatre and have lit many shows there in the past, a really lovely theatre with so much atmosphere.
