Theaters have very limited recycling value, and though they were built fireproof, their furnishings backstage and front get a lot of abuse. And when new theater technology like electic lighting and cinema sound came in, the old music halls were expensive and difficult to refit. So it's no wonder it wasn't saved in the 30's and 50's as Historic Preservation is a more recent concept. But I would have loved to see a Panto in the Kennington Theatre.Mike Brubakerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13065245846262417519noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-484198747535822445.post-29172837946845262312012-10-18T15:16:47.875+01:002012-10-18T15:16:47.875+01:00The theatre looked so much better than block of fl...The theatre looked so much better than block of flats!!!pentrellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17027034361408909735noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-484198747535822445.post-49668447415683061882012-10-17T21:36:04.997+01:002012-10-17T21:36:04.997+01:00According to the arthurlloyd.co.uk website, it cea...According to the arthurlloyd.co.uk website, it ceased to be a theatre in 1934. Plans to turn it into an Odeon cinema didn't work out. It was damaged by bombing in the war and partially demolished in 1943. Purchased by the council in 1949 and flats were built on the site in 1950.Howardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07556727166267551805noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-484198747535822445.post-11550144143535815312012-10-17T10:38:32.604+01:002012-10-17T10:38:32.604+01:00Do you know if the demolition was as a result of d...Do you know if the demolition was as a result of damage in the war?Lisa Bhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10562101358640638937noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-484198747535822445.post-64739385024776810062012-10-17T10:36:48.257+01:002012-10-17T10:36:48.257+01:00The comparison here is shocking! The comparison here is shocking!Lisa Bhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10562101358640638937noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-484198747535822445.post-59389395610584133482012-10-17T04:37:47.190+01:002012-10-17T04:37:47.190+01:00Makes me wonder if we've just lost our collect...Makes me wonder if we've just lost our collective sense of aesthetics.Christine H.https://www.blogger.com/profile/09786732494496282743noreply@blogger.com
