Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, Batchworth Lock c1913

Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, Batchworth Lock c1913. Batchworth Lock serves the Grand Union Canal and is now home to the Rickmansworth Waterways Trust. The barge on the left carries the number 1922 and appears to be called 'Brimo', but I cannot find any record of this barge online. Other text on the stern states 'Carriers between Oxford and Reading' and 'Upper Thames Blackfriars Towing and Carrying'. I would be grateful if any readers could confirm the identity of the barge, there's a close-up of the stern under the Google Street View.
Postcard by W. H. Applebee of Ashford. This postcard was posted from Rickmansworth in August 1916 to East Dulwich. Click the postcard images to enlarge.

  2. Must have been interesting to live so close and be able to watch the boats and the lock.

  4. I like the way the postcard scene includes people.

  5. My folks just cruised through the Erie Canal, a bit wider but probably not by an awful lot. Locks fascinate me. I suppose I will have to explore some one of these days.

  6. What a coincidence that the Google StreetView camera would record an image from nearly the same vantage point as the photographer. The photo also records how canals kept the thousands of urban horses and cattle supplied with hay and fodder from the rural farms. On return I would think the Brimo was piled high with manure.

  7. It seems as if time stood still.

  8. They were so good at getting the maximum amount of boat and cargo into the minimum amount of lock.

  9. Hmmm... Brisno is the only other possibility I could think of...
