Hale, Cumbria, The Kings Arms Hotel, c1915

Hale, Cumbria, The Kings Arms Hotel, circa 1915. Hale is a village near Milnthorpe, previously in Westmoreland, now in Cumbria. The Kings Arms is an 1810 coaching inn and is still in business. The postcard was posted in March 1915 to a Miss G Hughes of Oaklands Park, Ballsbridge, Dublin. The message reads
'Milnthorpe 30/3/15. I had a cup of tea in this house today and it is a glimpse of the long road north. I hope to be settled soon. I was in Morecambe last night. With every kind wish to you, I have to get letter sent back from Carlisle. With Love, Jack'.

  1. I'm sure we stopped for lunch there a few years back. Doesn't look as imposing as it did in 1915, and if it is the same Pub I suspect the service was better then as well.

  2. I would love to stop by here myself. What a beautiful card- and such a lovely note from Jack!

  3. Remarkably similar, although I think the entrance looks far better in 1915.

  4. There were probably bicycles, motorbikes, and automobiles to add to traffic outside the King's Arms but the pastoral qualities were still important. Today the motorcar rules the road.
