Eye, Cambridgeshire, High Street circa 1909. Eye is a village close to Peterborough in the county of Cambridgeshire. This slighty out-of-focus postcard was by an uncredited photographer and was posted in September 1909 to an address in Norwich. Looking at the Google Street View the village seems to have retained its peaceful rural character. Click the postcard to enlarge.

The photographer chose a very quiet moment for his shot.
ReplyDeleteThere is a subtle irregular line to the antique street and pavement that gets straightened in the modern habit of uniform dimensions. A quality that gets lost in today's urban planning.
ReplyDeleteThat's a great photo. The village has retained some of its rural heritage but as the nearby city of Peterborough grows ever closer it's constant battle with the local council to protect what we have left. Thank you for posting and letting us know.
