Farington, Lancashire, Spring Gardens c1912

Farington, Lancashire, Spring Gardens circa 1912. Farington is a village just north of Leyland. This part of Stanifield Lane used to be called Spring Gardens. One of the newspaper headlines on the left says 'Suffragist threat to blow up express' which may help to date the postcard. Click the postcard to enlarge.

  1. Spring Gardens looks a fine place to live in 1912, and the terraced houses must have been a bit more upmarket to have what looks like a small 'garden' area and railings in the front rather than the doors opening on to the street. Thanks for showing the now too.

  2. It's interesting that the street level has risen to cover the front gate step blocks. A feature not seen anymore. And when was the iron fencing taken away? WWI?

  3. The railings will have been taken away during WWII so the metal could be used to make munitions etc

  4. My husbands 3x greatfather used to live at number 12 in 1871. His name was William Higham.
